Outside my academic work, I’m also a brass musician, and play trumpet, cornet, and flugelhorn, as well as dabbling on the much less well-known E♭ soprano cornet. I do a lot of work with local brass bands, and have in the past conducted Honiton Band, as well as playing with Exeter Railway, Durnovaria Silver, and Lyme Regis. I’ve also conducted the on-the-day scratch band at Bandamonium, an annual festival of brass band music in West Devon.

Over the years, I’ve also played in a variety of pit bands and ensembles, most recently Sidmouth Amateur Dramatics Society’s panto band, and before that Exeter University’s Gilbert and Sullivan Society and Footlights.
