Alongside my academic work, I’ve done freelance work for a number of years now, with experience working with both individuals and larger organisations. I find the process of working with collaborators incredibly rewarding, and take pride in working together to identify what I can bring to any project.

Medieval French, translation, and pronunciation

I have several years’ experience of composing in medieval French (from various periods and places). Most recently, I have worked on the Netflix series, Vikings: Valhalla, to which I contributed lines of dialogue in Norman French. (Read more about the process here!) I’ve also had the pleasure of working with the author Marie Gethins, with whom I collaborated to provide 14th-century equivalents to modern French proverbs for use in her novel. Most recently, I’ve contributed to BBC Radio 4’s Word of Mouth programme on French in medieval Britain, including offering advice on pronunciation.

All of which is to say: if you’re wondering how to say something in medieval French, or want some advice on working with the language more generally, do get in touch! I’ll see what I can do to help.

Training, development, and advocacy

During my PhD, I developed an interest in researcher development, and have offered training (predominantly to PGRs) in areas relating to my expertise. This has included running training sessions on text encoding (specifically TEI-P5), blogs and social media for postgraduates, and academic writing. In 2021, I prepared a suite of resources for the University of Exeter’s Doctoral College aimed at preparing candidates for the PhD viva.
